ST CUTHBERT’S RAG Payne *
This was inspired by Chet Atkins. Played in dropped
D tuning. I used my Martin HD 28.
DAFFODIL Payne
My dad’s favourite flower. He passed away around this time
and the tune reflects my mood.
Martin HD 28 on this one.
DOC LEAF Payne *
This was inspired by the great Doc Watson. I’d been playing Deep River Blues. I
used D tuning with the top A tuned down to B. So it’s really D6, of sorts. I
used my Gibson J45.
ST CUTHBERT'S MOAN Payne *
This tune has had many versions, especially just lately
with the
‘Journey Suite’ which you can hear as St
Cuthbert’s
lament with string quartet.
This is the bare bones played on the Martin HD 28 in
Csus4add9 tuning. Capo at 2nd fret.
DOODLE RAG Payne
Doodle it is! Another open D ramble capo on 4th fret, I think!
Gibson J45 again.
SAVANNAH BLUES Payne
I’d become a big fan of this strange modal tuning - E A A E A E.
It creates a distinctive African flavour, hence this rambling improvisation. I
used an old Giannini jumbo style guitar. It stays locked in this tuning!
SARABANDE Payne *
This was originally recorded for the
‘Elizabeth Suite’. I’m a big fan of John Renbourne’s ‘The Earl Of Salisbury’, so I recently added the Glockenspeil to re
create that sound. The Martin HD 28 here again.
BLUE LOTUS RAG Payne *
I recorded this tune some years ago as part of a collection of instrumentals
called ‘The Fingerstyle Blues Collection.’ Played on my trusty old Takamine.
SHED ONE Payne
Now, this came about while messing about in my shed. I think I recorded it on my
phone using Garage Band. I liked it very much and decided to keep the demo as it
is. The guitar is my little white ‘Bellini,’ made in South Africa in the 50’s.
SECRET Payne *
Originally composed for the St Cuthbert Suite. Once again developed for
the
'Journey Suite' with string quartet. Played on HD28
TUNE FOR ANJI Payne *
Yes, you guessed it! My version of the classic Davey Graham tune, with a few
twists and turns. Played on Gibson J45.
WEDDING TUNE Payne
This started out as a song performed at my cousin’s wedding. Then morphing into
an instrumental, then developed into a string quartet for my album,‘Journey
Suite’. The final result became the track, ‘Love.’
WESTERN PLAIN Payne
Composed especially for a film library - As the title suggests, a
western theme?
Played on Gibson J45.
